Dyslexia is an advantage.
Assistive devices and special software for dyslexia can be expensive, so it's helpful to know that lending libraries exist in almost every state so that you can try before you buy."
There are many reasons to personally try out a program before buying - sometimes the speech-to-text is hard to understand, or an assistive device is too heavy or cumbersome to use on a regular basis.
In Washington state, WATAP or the Washington Assistive Technology Act Program has a catalog of equipment that can be borrowed (http://watap.org/tryout/products.php?cat=4). The University of Washington and Central Washington University also has similar programs.
In some cases, equipment can be borrowed through the public school system. Contact your resource room or special education teacher for information.

* Also be aware some assistive technologies and special education can be deducted from taxes as a medical expense. Contact your accountant for details because tax laws can change.
