I was reading an article and struck by the sentence "Reading comprehension problems in young dyslexic children are usually due to problems in phonology, but reading comprehension problems in older dyslexic students are usually due to impaired syntax."

Great point.

Don't think people understand how confusing complex syntax is to many students.

Hints of Syntax Confusion:

  • Mistakes on tests due to misreading or misunderstanding of auestions rather than lack of knowledge
  • Essays seem 'simple' because of an over-reliance on simple sentences
  • Awkward sentence construction and impaired grammar conventions

Common problem areas:

  • Direct and indirect objects (Who did what to whom? - The cat that the dog chased jumped over the fence)
  • Gerunds (My cat's favorite activity is sleeping)
  • Participles (barking dog, crying baby, etc.)
  • Dependent clauses
