I have a 12yo who is a severe dyslexic and has made great strides in working through the Phono Graphix approach- We also worked through Phonics for Reading  ( he absolutely loved this program and I hated it to end at level 3). Since then, I have not been using anything for his remediation and while he is still doing "ok" I would like to keep up a bit more remediation where he is only reading at about a beginning of fourth grade level or so ( perhaps a bit under).   What programs are helpful ( not babyish) for my 12yo who might need a bit more scaffolding in this area? As I said he loved Phonics for Reading and when it ended I called them asking what may be next and they recommended Reading Rewards, which we bought and he hated~ any thoughts or recommendations for him would be greatly appreciated.   Tracey

Is it possible he might like something like Phonetic Zoo for Spelling? Are you allowing him to read along with books on tape? Some times at this age you can also pick up a lot of phonics this way.

Anyone else share what worked for them?  Thanks everyone!

We have not used Phonetic Zoo at this point since he is not at their level just yet, almost but not quite there. He is working Sequential Spelling now and it is going very well. I think I will incorporate the audio books on tape I think this will help build up the fluency. Thank you for the input~ Tracey
Another thought too - have you looked at a leveled reader program like ReadingAtoZ.com  ? Sometime it's easier to find content that will appeal to older students - but also make sure that certain phonics concepts aren't being skipped.
I was going to be looking at A to Z for that particular purpose. I think their readers might be very helpful.  So far we have stepped back a bit and done a bit of reviewing and reading, reading , reading.. and things are starting to come together. I am also going to continue to review the skills learned so far and look at more hi/lo readers as well. Thanks for this great reminder. :) tracey

When my son was going into fifth grade he was a 1st and 2nd grade reading level.  Then we went to the Linda Mood Bell Center and in the 10 week program intensive five day a week, five hours a day program.  At the completion of the program he went into the 5th grade at reading level!  Now he loves to read!

There were teenagers in the program and kids of all ages.  We live in Michigan and there was a parent who rented an apartment for the program from Toronto.

Hope it helps...
