I want to preface this by saying that we are working in the public school framework because that is what my kids are choosing to do. It is not my first choice.

My 14 year old son just finished 8th grade. Apparently,I have learned after an email discussion with the LA teacher, he tends wait until they are reviewing for a test before"presenting his ideas." I feel this due to their teaching style. For example, when they are reading a book, they are allowed to only read one chapter at a time, then the classroom disscusion is done, then they continue on is a sequential manner through the book. He does read ahead, which is not allowed, and is able to somehow conceal that fact during the process.

He spends a lot of time thinking about the book, and that may be the reason his ideas are being presented at an "inappropiate" time.He thinks they are trying to control the interpretation of book, which I believe is true in part. He also tends to bring in other ideas from his great knowledge of history and other knowledge.

What is essential to the dyslexic learning style? For example, I feel the book should be read in it's entirety before a real discussion can take place.

It is apparently an issue in ss also. I am rebelling and buying the books for next year now to hopefully have them read in advance.

I really think this is a learning style issue, plus difficulties in focusing in - within the boundaries of their framework.

What a great observation, Christine.

I would agree this is a learning style issue. I can't tell you how many times we hear about students having trouble with workload because they want to know more about certain topics that are raised in class, but the lectures have moved on.

An artist friend from my high school days took a job in marketing for surgical equipment, but she got into a little trouble with her boss at one point because she wanted read more about how the equipment worked, although they just wanted to have the pictures!

Brock has told me that he had trouble in medical school when the surgery lectures covered only 1 organ at a time - he wanted to know how all the organs worked with other systems in the body - and so often found himself doing extra reading at the time (in addition to him being a slow reader!).

I think this is part of the "big picture" dyslexic learning style.
