Dyslexia is an advantage.
What
are the best colleges for dyslexia?
The answer to this question depends on student interests, faculty:student
ratio, support services for learning disabilities /
differences,
flexibility in curriculum, and the severity of dyslexia-related
challenges.
Some students may only require writing support from their
university's writing center, where as others will require more
supports, meeting regularly with a tutor or counselor, reduced
courseload, and a full range of assistive technologies. Some
students also choose a 2 year college transitional program instead
of enrolling in a conventional curriculum but seeking outside
support from on campus disability resources.
Colleges with Strong Formal Learning Disability / Dyslexia Progams:
Arizona SALT Center-
Arizona State's Strategic Alternative Learning Center provides
"individualized educational planning and monitoring, assistance
from certified tutors with coursework, and an array of
workshops
geared toward their individual academic needs. Additionally,
students have the opportunity to use the SALT computer lab
(complete with an array of assistive technology) and/or "drop
in"
to either the SALT Writer's Lab or the SALT Math and Science
Lab,
both staffed with highly trained certified tutors."
Landmark College -
Landmark College is a 2 year transitional college in Vermont.
"...Landmark College is one of the only accredited colleges in
the
United States designed exclusively for students with dyslexia,
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), or
other specific learning disabilities.
Students at Landmark get far more personal, directed assistance
than at other colleges. Each student receives individualized
attention from classroom instructors—in courses tailored to
meet
your educational needs. We have courses for skills development,
college credit, and an Associate Degree Program for individuals
who
have average—to superior—intellectual potential. Our
experienced
advisors meet frequently with you to review and guide your
progress. All instructors are trained professional educators,
not
teaching assistants or peer tutors.
Beacon
College - Beacon College (Leesburg, Florida) offers AA
and
BA degrees to students with LDs in Liberal Studies, Human
Services,
and Computer Information Services.
University of Connecticut BOLD -
"The B.O.L.D program is specifically geared towards
college students with learning disabilities (LD) and addresses
the
unique needs of students with LD, LD and Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or psychiatric
disabilities. The program is built around the concept of
Universal
Design for Instruction (UDI) which means we proactively seek to
build learning opportunities and support environments that
anticipate the needs of students with learning disabilities.
Students receive individualized support in an inclusive campus
setting.
The program focuses on skills and learning experiences relevant
for transitioning from high school to college during the
freshman
and sophomore years, and skills and competencies that prepare
students for work and/or higher education during the junior and
senior years.
Students meet with a trained strategy instructor (learning
specialist) on a weekly basis to develop and participate in a
support plan which is guided by the student’s particular needs,
approved accommodations, their program of study, and goals for
a
positive college experience."
The University of Iowa REACH Program is a two-year, transition certificate program for students with multiple intellectual, cognitive, and learning disabilities. REACH provides a living-learning campus experience a to empower young adults to become independent, engaged members of the community. Coursework, campus life, and career preparation assist students in reaching their full potential. Post-graduation support assists students as they transition to work and self-sufficiency.
