My name is Sheryl and I'm guessing like a lot of you school was hard. I was held back in 1st grade and the teacher said I was dumb. I grow up beliving I was dumb and would never go to collage. I was never tested because I was just told thats just the way is  and I wasn't failing in evey subject in order to be tested. I was put in the special classes. When I graduated I was a c average student with a P on my math because the teacher was  nice enough to pass me so I could graduate.

I thought I was only good enough to be a stay at home mom and yes I loved it alot. My youngest daughter was dianosed with apreaxia and is doing well now. Anyway When she started school I decided to give college a try I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I enjoyed working with my daughter and decided to become a speach tharpist. I first semister was very hard and My adviser said tested for a learning disibilty and they told me it was writen comperation. Two years later I realized Speech   tharpy was not my pasion and switched to American sign language interpreter. I had to swich schools were it was offared and when I swithced this in when I found out it was not then writen comperation and It was also dyslixa. Its a very visual language and I love it. I struggleing  with spelling, ounding out words and understanding how words are used. I get very discourage when I see oter students comperhend it quickly and I don't.

I need advice to grow these skills so that I can become secussiful. I have days I want to quit and give up then I remind myself I want this bad. I have supporting  husband and friend they want to help but don't know how and I dont know how to tell them what I need. School is very hard and would appreate any help you all coiuld give me.

ThanksSheryl

Hi Sheryl

Your background is so impressive.  I can tell by your perseverance that you are a strong person. I think most people wouldn't even try to go back to school.

For me the accommodation in college that opened the door, so to speak,  was listening to what I was reading while reading in a setting without any distraction - like the library.  When I was in college we had books on cassettes. But now they have mp3s of books and cds and down loads.

Is there a Disability Support or other office at your school? Some of the support offices are quite good at the college level. They can also be very helpful talking to individual teachers who don't recognize the need for accommodation.

Some schools have all lectures on podcast or they videotape lectures and have them on reserve in the library.

You can have a designated note taker and also use iPad or Livescribe pen to help record notes yourself.

Many college students make an effort to talk to their teachers at the beginning of the course too.

You can do it!

Yes the accomadations are great but its up to us to tell him what accomaditions we need for our classes. I get more time on writen test and I asked f I could use a spell checker and he said no because the classes Im in requiered  spelling spelling has to be spelled correctly by menory. I don't know my strangths or how I learn best yet. I don't know what to ask him other then more time on written test. What can I do to figure out my stranghts? Also do you have any ideas on how I can strangthen my spelling and understanding concepts and meaning of words?

Thanks for your help

The spelling difficulties in dyslexia are brain-based and therefore, it is an ESSENTIAL accommodation for your education.

You should be given the option to type and use a spell checker.

Other common accommodations are note taker for all classes (this is usually easy to arrange - and the other students get money for doing this), option for a reader for exams, reduced courseload, and sometimes option to be orally tested if questions arise re: your mastery of a subject.

Here's a link to all the articles or video regarding accommodations:

Check out the Tech Group. Some people love Ginger Software. Some schools have Kurzweil software that you can check out for the semester.

You should also be able to get electronic books or audiobooks.
